A powerful tornado swept through the Khabarovsk region of Siberia felling three square kilometers of forest and leaving dozens of birds and animals dead, a local emergency agency reported. The incident sparked fears of an extraterrestrial impact.
The strange phenomenon sparked rumors in local communities that the tornado was a result of a UFO landing, a spokesperson for the Far-Eastern emergency situations center, Natalia Lukash, told the RIA-Novosti news agency.
A group of investigators headed to the affected area on Wednesday, the agency reported.
The team included emergency workers, officials of the regional natural resources ministry, geophysicists, the region’s chief sanitary doctor and other experts.
The team inspected the area from a helicopter and carried out a ground-based search taking samples of the air, ground, water and wood. Their preliminary report suggests the forest was felled by a powerful tornado that swept through the region, Lukash said.
