On October 23, 1998 while Captain of a TWA airliner on route from St. Louis to San Diego the co-pilot and I observed through the cockpit window, a white ball of light straight ahead. I radioed air traffic control for traffic ahead. Air traffic control told me the nearest traffic ahead was over 360 miles but there was a Continental airliner 5 miles behind us.
The ball of light was to the left of the cockpit window, then shot to the right, then back to the left, and traveled straight up and over us at a high rate of speed. The captain of the Continental airliner behind us remarked over the radio, "what the heck was that!"
