UFO Disinformation Agent Richard Doty is Up to His Old Tricks: Beware the Many Lies He Tells Steven Greer

Richard Doty is Up to His Old Tricks

As one of the first persons to expose Richard Doty’s disinformational activities, decades ago, I would like to offer the following information.

First, a few words about myself: Since 1973, I have interviewed more than 160 former or retired U.S. Air Force personnel regarding incidents involving UFO incursions at nuclear weapons sites. Seven of those individuals participated in my September 27, 2010 press conference in Washington D.C., which CNN streamed live. The video of that event

may be viewed at www.ufohastings.com. I will leave it to others to judge the value of my longstanding commitment to UFO Disclosure as well as the credibility of my ex-military sources.

Now, regarding Doty, anyone who believes his latest offering of BS, as presented in Steven Greer’s new film, is utterly naïve and deserves to be duped. As the following links will reveal, Doty’s long, deplorable track record of disseminating utterly false information about the UFO phenomenon, and the U.S. government’s knowledge of it, is remarkable and continues to this day.

Whether or not his current utterances merely serve his personal need to screw with persons such as Greer, and the rest of us—or are instead the latest chapter in his involvement in the government’s effort to confuse and misdirect public interest in the UFO topic—is unknown. However, given Doty’s many disreputable actions over the years, one needs to review and understand his history before attempting to evaluate his most recent public claims.

My first exposé on Doty, published in March 1989, may be read here:

My more recent if lengthy summary of Doty’s activities relating to the forged MJ-12 documents, the duping of Linda Moulton Howe, the psy-war operation against Dr. Paul Bennewitz and other nefarious deeds may found at:

A briefer overview of Doty’s role in the MJ-12 hoax is at:

A related examination of Doty’s repugnant actions toward Bennewitz, on behalf of OSI, is at:

Another researcher, Ryan Dube, has developed irrefutable information linking Doty to the Serpo Operation hoax, revealing Doty’s ongoing involvement in disinformation long after his retirement from the U.S. Air Force. While Dube is a UFO skeptic and often dismisses credible UFO cases as having no merit, his highly documented exposé on Doty is dead-on-target. It may be read here:

In 2009, I posted a public comment in which I said that New Mexico State Policeman Gabe Valdez had told me that Doty—who had joined the police force following his retirement from the Air Force—once told him that he, Doty, had forged “lots” of UFO-related documents while working at OSI at Kirtland AFB. Doty read the post and, on May 24, 2009, emailed me to say, “A simple fact, Mr. Hastings, everything I did during my intelligence days was sanctioned.” Significantly, Doty, in his response, didn’t deny my assertions regarding his involvement in forging the MJ-12 “documents” and other items.

Indeed, in a rare moment of candor, in the film Mirage Men, Doty finally confesses that the OSI operation against Linda Moulton Howe in the early 1980s, when she was presented with the fraudulent MJ-12 documents, was designed to derail the completion of her HBO documentary on the UFO cover-up.

I had first made that claim, publicly, in the late ‘80s and, later, in my 2009 “Operation Bird Droppings” article, linked above. It only took Doty three decades to come clean on this but at least it’s now a matter of record.

Nevertheless one may still find numerous articles online about the alleged validity of MJ-12, written by supposedly astute persons who just can’t admit that they have been had. Even today, Linda Howe continues to gush about the wonderful revelations she was privy to, courtesy of Doty, completely ignoring the bogus nature of the “documents” she was presented.

So, folks, it’s up to each of you to either review these linked items or just ignore them. I know from long experience that many persons are only interested in the most sensationalistic claims about UFOs, aliens, and the government cover-up, and will not take the time to investigate whether any given claim on the Internet actually has a factual basis, in the form of vetted witness testimony and/or authenticated declassified documents, which are at a minimum required to substantiate it beyond a reasonable doubt.

Sad but true.

I cannot prevent Richard Doty from playing the games for which he is so infamous, nor can I prevent foolish, gullible persons from swallowing his crap, which they will certainly do. However, those who wish to understand what he is up to here, using factual, documented information to investigate his past actions, should take the time to check out these links.

  1. I appreciate the real work you have done Mr Hastings. As for Richard Doty, it seems he is quite frank [now] that he was doing paid dirty work - which reinforces what most of us KNOW to be a "cover-up" of the reality of the UFO phenomena. I am not sure how this makes every utterance of his a lie. Details in his Greer interview might be bogus...but the thrust of what he says matches very well what loads of other Greer witnesses have said, such as the control & payoffs to media. I still think his testimony has value, I could care less about his comments on an ET getting a voice box surgically added [that surely is nonsense]. The point we need to make to Joe Public is: Stop the giggle factor, THIS IS REAL.

  2. Unfortunately, Unknown, *most* of what Doty says is NOT REAL and only serves to pollute the UFO phenomenon database. As Bill Moore—the now-disgraced researcher recruited by Doty to spy on other ufologists and to dangle disinformation in front of Linda Howe and other investigators—said during his “confession speech” at the MUFON symposium in July 1989,

“Disinformation is a strange and bizarre game. Those who play it are completely aware that an operation’s success is dependent upon dropping information upon a target, or ‘mark,’ in such a way that the person will accept it as truth and will repeat, and even defend it to others as if it were true. Once this has been accomplished, the work of the counterintelligence specialists is complete. They can simply withdraw in the confidence that the dirty work of spreading their poisonous seeds will be done by others...Every time one of you [ufologists] repeats an unverified or unsubstantiated bit of information, without qualifying it as such, you are contributing to that process; and every time you do it, somebody in a need-to-know position sits back and has a horse laugh at your expense.”

  3. AFOSI Richard C. Doty refers to the following in the Greer documentary "Unacknowledged": mind control used to create staged abductions (so secret he cannot discuss but still happening), paying cash to journalists to cover-up news, and his direct supervision of the Cash/Landrum case as an Air Force Officer of Special Investigations. He also makes clear that he was manipulated by media interviewers who 'faked' his participation. Whatever the criticism of him has been in the past, this interview rises above 99% of the dreck on the UFO subject. I do not understand how anyone could not be interested. Difficult to understand why he would go public and make himself available as a witness in any civil suit for damages in the Cash/Landrum case ... if he was not prepared to testify in court.

  4. The key question, Ms. Warren, is whether any of Doty’s “revelations” in his interview with Greer are TRUE. He didn’t provide any evidence to substantiate even one of the claims you cite as, er, non-dreck.

Do you have such evidence or are you one of those persons who simply likes what he/she hears and so will endorse it without first conducting an investigation to ascertain the facts?

Did you read even one of the linked articles mentioned in my article? If so, please tell me which one; I would like to conduct a quiz here in the Comments section to attempt to determine how careful a reader you are.

I possess verifiable evidence that Doty forged documents while with OSI at Kirtland AFB. Do you have evidence to the contrary?

I possess taped conversations with Linda Moulton Howe, confirming that Doty was instrumental in disseminating disinformation to her regarding the existence of a supposedly above-Top-Secret group called MJ-12. In reality, no evidence exists to confirm the group as real. Do you have evidence to the contrary? If so, please cite it here.

I possess Doty’s DD214 service record which confirms that he was later de-certified as an OSI agent, allegedly relating to his mishandling of funds, and that he ended his Air Force career as a food service supervisor at Kirtland AFB’s East Dining Hall. I notice that Doty didn’t mention that fact in his interview with Greer. Were you aware of this?

Researcher Ryan Dube possesses irrefutable evidence that items relating to the still-widely-discussed Project Serpo were hoaxed—typed up on Doty’s home computer. Do you possess evidence to the contrary? Doty denies any culpability despite proof of his involvement.

I could go on but I won’t because I would be wasting my time. I know from decades of participation in ufology that many of its practitioners are sloppy researchers, or non-researchers, and that a great many members of the public will believe any frigging thing about UFOs that strikes their fancy, even though no evidence exists to support a given claim. Thank you for contributing to the noise level.

  5. Hey Robert..Thanks for this.
You know the field is doomed..when two people bother to comment..and acknowledge that he is full of it..yet at the same time..hang on some insane hope that amongst his lies..their will be some golden nuggets of "truth".
The term useful idiots springs to mind.

  6. Mr Hastings, you are making a lot of false statements about Rick Doty, SERPO and the Mj12 documents which are backed by the forensics done by Bob and Ryan Wood.

  7. I've listened to a lot of Richard Doty's stories about his numerous and regular alien contacts here on earth. Simple question, Why doesn't he just take a photo?

  8. With all due respect, Mr. Hastings, there is a part of me that feels there may yet be some truth to Doty's recent claims. I concede to your point about ufology being muddled with flimsy evidence, half-ass research and superstition, and moreover I concede that trusting Richard Doty is a vergence on dangerous territory, given his history. Allow me to explain my reasoning all the same.
Firstly, and I say this only as it pertains to my opinion of you, as no one of us on this comment section knows you personally, your response to a commentor you called "Ms. Warren" sounded a little aggressive. You seemed driven in your desire to have him or her believe you, and you even came across as a little arrogant. Assuming those who don't agree with you are sheep chasing anything and everything they hear in ufology doesn't strike me as boding well for gaining respect. Like my fellows who have challenged the claims you make in your article, I'm not entirely convinced of Doty's alleged disinformation. That doesn't mean I believe everything I hear, or that any research conducted on my part is inadequate.

Secondly, concerning the Majestic 12, there are others who are not connected to Doty, who have likewise alleged the existence of this elite, shadow organization. Bob Lazar claimed to have possessed Majestic clearance while at S4. If you're about to launch into a lengthy, egotistical tirade about how foolish I am for believing him (which I imagine you will) I'm all ears, because that's what serious communication requires, but just know that you're sort of coming off a little proud and more than a little pushy. I can't deny that I'm not particularly interested in being drawn into a debate on Lazar, but again, I'm not going to back down from one either.

On the subject of Doty, certain of his claims, albeit unrelated to ETI, I feel MUST be true. His references to corruption within the media, and payoffs for false stories, or as we know them today "fake news," strikes me as an almost certainty. Maybe it's the conservative in me, but I can't help but feel that IF Doty were really working for some agency, sowing seeds of disinformation, he would have refrained from saying as much as he did on this particular issue. Even if his points about aliens is a load of crap, why would he admit to the fed using the media to lie to the American people? Former President Trump took SERIOUS heat for making such claims. It just seems like if Doty is still a plant, his employer, whoever that may be, is equally and simultaneously benefiting from and being screwed over by him.

    Just my thoughts.
